A nice war-date Union officer's letter, 7pp. 8vo, written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, as an officer on Hooker's staff, "Lookout Valley, [Tenn.], May 4, 1864", to his wife concerning the opening of the Atlanta campaign and describing his new superior, Hooker, in small part: "…will move out nearer the enemy & feel their position…Genl Grant will soon start the ball in Virginia…Genl Sickles is here yet hobbling around on crutches [after losing a leg at Gettysburg]. He is the man that Keyes at Washington for unlawful intimacy with his (Sickles) wife…I sent you…that 11th Corps badge…you can wear the badge if you like…yesterday Genl. Hooker appointed me as his staff ordnance officer…I shall fill both capacities as adjutant for Major Reynolds & ordnance off…Genl. Hooker…would…suit your ideal of a military man. He is a little taller than I, well proportioned, handsome & has a magnificent military dignified bearing…tell Pa his Soldier Boy is ready for a campaign now…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal envelope. Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman.
