A great war-date Union officer's battle letter, 2pp. 4to, written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, as an officer on Hooker's staff, "In the field near Dallas, Georgia, May 29, 1864", to his wife mentioning the heavy fighting occurring outside Dallas, Georgia as the Union army drives Johnson before it, in part: "…we left Cassville…[and] on the 25 [th] we met the enemy about three miles from here (I. E. our Corps. As the others were in the rear of us) & we charged them over this entire space until dark when we were compelled to stop…a heavy thunder storm came on at the same time. We suffered heavily but did the Rebs much damage. Now the enemy are fortified in our front about three miles from the town of Dallas…Hooker the terror of the 'Graybacks' is about to make another movement on their flank…I sometimes think you are all I have to live for!…Lt. Ahreets was obliged to return to the hospital as his wound troubled him so much…to day is the Sabbath but the heavy skirmishing along our lines heeds it not, but is intent on blood & victory. Our line just in front of the 20th Corps are only about 150 or 200 yards from the enemy's and Capt. Wheeler is there with his battery. Yesterday we fired into the Rebs lines with his battery & stirred them up generally. Non of our staff were injured in the last engagement but were much exposed. Hope they never be. Lt. Taylor is doing finely…Capt. Kirlin had some photos struck…& gave me one which I send…I'll try & get Genl. Hooker's before long. We are now about 30 miles from Atlanta & hope soon to drive Johnston in confusion from the field…". Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman. Near fine
