A great war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to, written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, as an officer on Hooker's staff, "In the field near Marietta, Georgia, June 9, 1864", to his wife describing minor head quarter's activity during a lull in the fighting, in part: "…could you take a peep into my tent situated in a beautiful Southern grove…you too would almost dance with renewed life vigor…on my right sits my war torn valise with my cloths…on my left is my camp chair…while all around the tent is strewn the different paraphernalia of office business & the green leaves of the forest. But a few steps from my tent sits the renowned Hooker in all his accustomed modesty & ease contemplating…the campaign…never was there a better patriot…we expected to move early this A. M. but the order was countermanded…(Oh! The Genl. has a call from Genl. Butterfield who commands our 3rd Div. He…is a fine Genl)…we expect to move again…towards Atlanta. We learn that Genl. Grant has Lee in Richmond & if we get Johnston into Atlanta…Rebellion is then gone up…[I] just got a Chattanooga paper…also a Missouri Republican…it was a rare treat to get them while so far away from our base. The R. R. will be completed very soon as far as Ackworth, Ga. about 15 or 20 miles from Atlanta. Then we can get supplies without much trouble …". Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, was wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman.
