A good war-date Union officer's letter written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, as an officer on Hooker's staff, 2pp. 4to, "Hd. Qrs. 20th Army Corps, In the field near Ackworth, Ga., June 10, 1864", to his parents reassuring them of his conviction to fight to the end, in part: "…we are expecting to advance every moment but as the Corps (Genl Howard's 4th) which was to go ahead…has not passed…I scribble this…we will flank the Rebs out of their new works this side the Chattahooche River thus throwing them back at or nearly to Atlanta…the general impression is we'll siege them out. We hear good reports from the Potomac. [I] hope they will continue to be successful till treason & armed traitors are known no more on the desecrated soil of Va…when I consider the importance of this mighty cause that I love as my life I even sacrifice the above mentioned enjoyments -the paternal home…I trust these sacrifices will not be demanded for a great length of time but that the flower of the Rebellion may soon be destroyed & the honored & war worn survivors of this deadly struggle return to their 'loved homes' & enjoy the rich reward of…a reunited country…". Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, was wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman.
