A great war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 4to, written by Lieut. William H. Mickle, Co. H, 134th New York Vol., "Head-Quarters Artillery Brigade, Twentieth Corps" stationery, Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 8, 1864" to his wife describing his impression of the Union cause and the critical reelection of Lincoln, in part: "Behold another opportunity offers itself in the 'Gate city'…if men are true to themselves, their country & their God, they will slow to all the world by this day's 'Election' that right shall triumph. The cause of humanity shall speak for itself. Traitors shall be permanently defeated…those undecided and weak in the knees shall become firm & strong. While the enemies of Christianity & true American liberty shall hide their face in shame for the course they have pursued. The time is not far distant when Northern Rebels will be held in more supreme contempt than Jeff Davis & his minions. How blessed a thing it is for our country & her institutions that Christianity is her main support…I would like to be at home to day & assist at the Election…but…I should be annoyed & become very indignant while listening to the jargon of copperheads & I don't know but the Devil…[that] my arm…should be very apt to strike them…then again…it would not be in strict conformity with the Gospel & would be degrading a Union man to notice such traitors…I went down to call on Genl Howard this a.m. found him quite tired after his chase after Hood , but said he would be ready for the coming movement…Lieut. Freeman was mustered into the service yesterday & today goes to his Battery for duty…I don't know but fancy that Peter will vote for 'Honest Abe' and as you wrote Frank to make John vote for him too…if they vote contrary to my arguments they will be ashamed of it…write me all about the Election…keep me posted on all…political matters…". Raising to the rank of captain, Mickle served faithfully throughout the remainder of the war, being wounded at Gettysburg, and serving as a staff officer for Generals Howard, Hooker, and Sherman.
