Sixth plate cased ambrotype, the sitter wearing an early Richmond Depot shell jacket with shoulder straps, the sleeves sporting one chevron and the front secured by nine buttons. Some of the buttons received only partial gilt paint and are clearly regulation block "A" artillery buttons. A much later penciled note behind the image reads, "Dillard Crowder killed in action Civil War." Two databases were consulted to no avail as to the soldier's identity. Some emulsion loss along the photograph's left side does not affect the image. A rare Confederate portrait with the subject's branch of service readily apparent. Very good.
