A good war-date ca. 1862 CDV showing Lieutenant Colonel James Garfield as commander of the 42nd Ohio in late 1861, but soon rose in rank commanding a brigade at Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. Later he became William S. Rosecrans' chief of staff and gave the general advise which, if heeded, could have resulted in the battle of Chickamauga being a Union victory instead of a defeat. In late 1863, Garfield resigned his commission to take his earlier won seat in Congress. While in Washington, he became a Radical Republican and backed Secretary Salmon P. Chase in opposition to Lincoln and his meek war policies. The image is published by Edward T. Anthony, New York and Washington. The 2 3/8" x 3 3/4" photograph is near fine with excellent contrast and clarity
