A great war-date CDV showing the battle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteers. Born near the beginning of the war she was brought to war in Sept. 1861 by several members of the soon to be formed color company. It is known she was carried, on a custom made perch, into the battles of Corinth and Vicksburg. During the fighting she would scream and flap her wings at the Confederate forces and even lost several feathers to flying bullets. Becoming legendary, the Confederates even tried to capture her, but were unsuccessful. "Old Abe" returned home to Wisconsin in early 1864 and after the war became a fixture at numerous GAR reunions. She resided at the Wisconsin State Capital, but sadly died there during a fire in 1881. The 2 3/8" x 4" photograph was published by " The Photographic Art Palace" of E. R. Curtiss, Madison, Wisc. Near fine with excellent contrast and clarity
