CDV portrait of seven well-dressed African-Americans, male and female, with Hovey, Philadelphia backmark, the verso twice pencil dated "Jan 23, 1863" and signed twice by a "Carolina Sanford." An enigmatic group photo made within weeks of the Emancipation Proclamation. Perhaps these young people were teachers preparing to help contrabands navigate their way into the free world. Worthy of research. Stains on the mount, else very good condition.
