A great war-date CDV of the U. S. General hospital at Mound City, Illinois. Depicted is an engraving of the three story brick building (originally a warehouse) with an American flag flying from the roof. Interestingly, Angela Gillespie (1824-1887) Mother Superior of the Sisters of the Holy Cross helped establish the Mound City hospital while the sisters of St, Mary's Convent, South Bend, Indiana staffed the hospital as nurses. Dr. Horace Warnder was the surgeon in charge. A century after the war the building was again a warehouse, but this time for the Cairo River & Rail Company. VG
