A rare war-date CDV showing photographer Royan H. Linn standing next to Pulpit Rock, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga. The verso is inscribed in period ink: :Pulpit Rock, Lookout Mountain, Aug. 31st 1864." Linn immediately traveled to Lookout Mountain following the battle in December 1863. He set up a studio on the peak of the mountain and from late 1863 through the end of the war he produced thousands of images of soldiers and civilians alike. Linn died in 1872, his young six year old son, George and his brother maintained the gallery until 1886 then an outside firm ran the business until 1900. That year George returned and operated the gallery until 1939 at which time when it was demolished. Near fine
