Traveling box form, 18" x 7-¾" x 8-¾", mahogany veneer over pine, brass hardware includes collapsible side handles, the lid is affixed with a cast brass shield supporting the crossed cannon and fouled anchor of the 9th Army Corps. The interior contains a pen tray, inkwell and point compartment above a slanting pine writing surface hinged over a storage space. Several areas of chipped veneer; expected light scuffs and normal wear. There are no lid hinges or lock, causing this to be in two parts. The 9th Army Corps contained four divisions and was originally under the command of Ambrose Burnside. Serving in various theaters between 1862 and 1865, this fighting corps was directly under U. S. Grant during the summer of 1864 and was with the Army of the Potomac for the duration of the Virginia campaign. Acquired in Delaware, Ohio. Family verbal history claims the desk belonged to Major Matthew Mitchell, 27th U. S. Colored Troops.
