Folding lithographed game board initialed "ESG" in one corner, 15" x 15 ¾", with LEE'S GUIDE TO THE GAME OF DRAUGHTS OR CHECKERS (Philadelphia, David McKay, n.d.), circa 1890s. The inside front cover is owner-stamped "Capt. E. S. Godfrey." Edward Settles Godfrey was a Union Army veteran, West Point graduate and career officer. His first posting after the Civil War was as a 2nd Lieutenant in Custer's 7th Cavalry. He would eventually earn the Medal of Honor for his actions against Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce. Both items with expected wear, good condition.
