Chicago photographer Alexander Hesler took four photographs of Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln on June 30, 1860. This 3/4 profile pose being one of them. After the Civil War George B. Ayres purchased Hesler's negatives, and in 1881 printed albumen images of Lincoln from those negatives, this being one of those images. In later years Ayres printed platinum and silver print photographs as well. In 1933 the glass plate negatives were broken while being shipped to Washington, D.C., and now reside in the Smithsonian Institution. This superb albumen image measures 5 3/4" x 7 7/8" (sight) and 12" x 14" overall in what looks to be the original 19th Century frame. The detail and tone of the image is excellent. There is a small 1" chip to the very top of the frame, else the frame is excellent. These albumen photographs of Lincoln are highly coveted by collectors, and have auction records to over $5,500.00 (Christies October 2010 photograph sale, lot #315). A great opportunity to acquire a true rarity
