General George McClellan Presidential Campaign Letter, 2-1/2 pp., August 31, 1864, Harbor Island, NY, with original transmittal cover, fine. Letter written by Sergeant Mason S. Chambers of the 169th NY Volunteers, to his wife, in part: "Gen. McClellan has received the nomination as candidate for President at the Chicago convention. I think he would make a very good President"...."I suppose the draft will take place on the 5th of Sept. According to all accounts most able bodied men are leaving Lisbon, I suppose they think "discretion is the better part of valor....". Many Union, as well as Confederate soldiers, were hoping that McClellan would be elected President thinking that he would end the war and negotiate a peace with the south, something Lincoln would not consider. A fine letter.
