Anti Lincoln letter, 4 pp., from up state New York, wife of an enlisted soldier writing to her Aunt, September 4, 1864, fold splits, else fine. Excellent content letter with content pertaining to men be drafted, men going to Canada to avoid the War, and anti Lincoln sentiments, in part: "I will tell you why I am feeling rather sad today as he enlisted yesterday and will of course leave soon. But I am in hopes it is for the best"...."I suppose people will think it is a strange move in him, but he considered it and talked with me before he enlisted, and I can't blame him as he thought it the best thing he could do under the circumstances as he was in debt"...."We commenced keeping house accounts of the draft for he did not know what he would do"...."Tomorrow is the day of the draft and he thought he had better get the bounty of $100.00 than be drafted as his chance was rather slim because so many were going to Canada"...."Gliberts health is getting better. He is now in the Reg. He is near Petersburg. He is thinking that this war is long enough and he is going to vote on the other side of the question this time for he thinks we will have war as long as Lincoln is President, and it is high time that peoples eyes were open....". Both Union and Confederate soldiers thought as long as Lincoln was President the war would last far longer than if McClellan was elected in 1864. With men running to Canada to avoid the draft it reminds us of the Vietnam era when young men choose to burn their draft cards and cross the border to Canada to avoid the draft. A fine letter.
