Civilian letter written and signed by “J(ohn) F. Steward,” September 15, 1864, Pontiac, 4pp., VG. Steward is writing his friend Maggie, in small part, “Maggie I am going to fill out the rest of this letter with what you will call politics ...You claim to be for the uniion .. but I might not think so .. you were for ‘Little Mac.’ ...If you were a voter, I would try and convert you. ... Are you in sentiment for McClellan, the man who subscribed to a platform made by Seymour, Valandingham & others who we know to be traders, whether ‘Little Mac’ is a traitor or not we perhaps can not say. What are those articles to which he subscribes ... that he should call a convention of the states and try to compromise with the south, What! shall we compromise with traitors....compromise ... after we have sacrificed so much blood & treasure ... I have fought Rebels to much too be willing that they should conquer & we submit to them. ... I love my country so well that I have offered my life ... I saw my country in trouble & rushed to its support ...”
