Civilian letter written and signed by “John F. Steward,” November 10, 1864, Pontiac, 4pp., VG. Steward is writing his friend Maggie, in small part, “The majority .. were sent up into the Northern part of the state & spy around & catch deserters who were expected to come over from Canada to vote. thank God, Maggie, the reins of the Government remain in safe hands for four years more. It is now settled that Lincoln is elected. Our country will still live ... On the other hand if McClellan had been elected national disunion and degration would have been washing us. ... I see by the papers that Illinois has given a large majority for Lincoln. ... I expect that our state would give a democratic majority. ...”
