Two complete and authentic issues of the Niles Weekly, Baltimore, May 12 and May 19, 1832, 6-1/2” x 10,” 16pp., disbound, VG. From the 12th, in part “Resolved, That Samuel Houston, now in custody of the sergeant-at-arms, should be forthwith discharged. ... The house then resumed the consideration of the case of Samuel Houston. Mr. Beardsley concluded his remarks against the motion declaring him guilty ot a breach of privilege....” From the 19th, a five page report, “House of Representatives” regarding charges against Samuel Houston. In small part, “...Friday, May 11. The house resumed the proceedings . in the case of Samuel Houston, the question being on the motion of Mr. Harper, for the liberation of the accused, with the amendment proposed thereto by Mr. Huntington, declaring that Samuel Houston was guilty of a contempt and breach of the privileges of the house. ...That Samuel Houston be brought to the bar of the house on Monday next, at 12 o'clock, and be there reprimanded by the speaker for the contempt and violation of die privileges of the house, of which he has been guilty ...” This was result of Houston beating Congressman William Stanbery of Ohio who had made accusations about Houston in a speech on the floor of Congress. Houston confronted Stanbery on Pennsylvania Avenue and beat him with a hickory cane. Stanbery drew one of his pistols and pulled the trigger—the gun misfired. On April 17 Congress ordered Houston's arrest. During his trial at the District of Columbia City Hall, he pleaded self-defense and hired Francis Scott Key as his lawyer. Houston was found guilty.
