A good early postwar North Carolina homesteading letter, 2pp. 4to., written by I. A. Peck, Bolton, Brunswick, N. C., July 10, 1866 concerning building a house (with a drawn plan included) and foaming a colony in rural North Carolina, in part: "…I send you a plan of my choice of a house for this climate…I can undertake…to get it up …[for] $420.00…the out side to be sheathed with inch boards running up and down and rough with stripes over the joints. The lower and upper floors to be plained and laid down all the doors to be put in and studding to be set for the hall and Rooms on the ground floor and the stairs to be put up. The house to be well roofed with best Cypress shingles also the porticoes and floors put in the particoes. The window sash and glass to be finished by you at your own expense to be delivered to me at Wilmington NC…you can determine if you will lath and plaster it or seal it with boards…also at your leaser take off the stripes and put siding on over the sheathing…I can get out the inside sealing stuff…and have it thoroughly dried…should you be here this fall…this ground requires ploughing…to let the sun have the necessary time to take out the natural sourness from the ground…we shall go on with our colony matter this fall, but sell only to those who have the means to improve the property…we have had much trouble with a few worthless persons who came here but they are fast disappearing. If you bring or buy a good team you can have ample work for them at good prices…teams are scare here…if you wish me to do anything about a house I should know very soon as all the time possible should be given the timber to dry before putting it up…brick for chimneys can be got 24 miles below here on the R Road. I do not wish the job of putting up the house but will do it to accommodate you and will build it as though it was for myself…". Also included is the hand drawn plan, read, in part: "The above plan is the best I can devise for such a house as you will require…shows you the ground floor, the second story can be arranged for three rooms or more if you desire the front building will be 16 foot posts and the rear or kitchen 13 foot posts…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. VG.
