Samuel E. Moffett (1860-1908), Nephew of author Mark Twain. Boudoir size image, measuring 6 7/8" x 9 3/4", Theo. C. Marceau, San Francisco photographers imprint. Moffet was an editor at Colliers Weekly and the son of Pamela A. (Clemens) Moffett, sister of Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens). Moffett was swimming at Seabright, which had rough all day. With his wife watching he started to struggle and slipped below the surface. Life guards did try to save him, but to no avail. He was brought to shore and attended by two local New York doctors, but they could not save him. All this time in the presence of his wife. Besides working for Colliers Moffett was with the San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Post, and also wrote several books. A rare image, mount chip at bottom right corner, else fine.
