Political letter, 1-1/4 pgs., October 4, 1856, College Hill, with original John Fremont portrait transmittal cover. The letter, written to Josiah Scott ( 1803-1879), an Ohio politician, and Ohio Supreme Court Judge, serving from 1856-1872. He was also a Presidential Elector in 1844 supporting Henry Clay for President. The letter, written by a J.J. Allen, is a recommendation letter for a Mr. Sargeant, who was a law student, and was seeking a position under Scott, who was too be joining the Supreme Court in November. He praises not only the young law student, but also future justice Scott. In closing. Allen writes "Truly Yours In the Bond of Republican Faith! Hope! and Charity!". The campaign of 1856 saw the first Republican candidate to run for President, John Fremont. Fremont did lose the election to Democrat James Buchanan. Any campaign material related to Fremont is scarce and quite desirable. Excellent.
