A group of five complete and authentic issues of the Alexandria Daily Gazette, Commercial & Political, July 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th, 1812, each 4pp., the issues are still bound together,VG. Each issue displays a very early use of the image of George Washington in the masthead, only 12 years after his death. Of course, Mount Vernon is a dozen miles south of Alexandria. George Washington would frequent the town. Each issue also has slavery advertisements, some from notables. Edmund I. Lee (The Lee’s of Virginia) list reward for runaway, John Dundas (former mayor of Alexandria) reward for Betty, and another for a family of “Seven Negroes.”
