Booklet, "Opinions of Martin Van Buren, Vice President of the United States, Upon The Powers and Duties of Congress, in Reference to the Abolition of Slavery Either in The Slave-Holding States or in the District of Columbia to Which are Added Sundry Documents Showing His Sentiments Upon Other Subjects," (Washington: Blair & Rives, 1836), 32pp., 8vo, self-cover bound in modern protective wrap. Van Buren wasn't about to be labeled an abolitionist during his Democratic bid for the presidency and vowed that should Congress abolish the institution "…he is ready to put the Presidential veto upon it, and to arrest the evil." He moved into the White House the following year. Very good condition.
