In March 1909, shortly after the end of his presidency, Roosevelt left New York for a safari in east and central Africa. Roosevelt's party landed in Mombasa, British East Africa (now Kenya), traveled to the Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) before following the Nile to Khartoum in modern Sudan. Financed by Andrew Carnegie and by his own proposed writings, Roosevelt's party hunted for specimens for the Smithsonian Institution and for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. This image, which looks to be a presentation type piece, is dated December 22, 1910, and pictures the former President with a group of people. On the bottom of the mount ir reads "First Row left to right: Embogo (Buffalo) brother of King Mutesa with whom Stanley treated He is the grand uncle of the present King and leader of the Muhamanedan Party here. M.M. Paul, Hon. Theodore Roosevelt, Dania Chua. King of Uganda Prince Joseph. 2nd row left to right Mrs. E.B. Price, Sister Mary Copistiam, Slanishaus Mugwanyag, Chief Justice and leading man of catholic Lakasia Kisingire. The tall man is sir Appolo Kugua, Regent and prairie minister of Uganda Kago a Baronial Chief in whose presence we live". The "Stanley" the inscription refers to is Henry Stanley of "Stanley and Livington". Stanley had gone to Africa in to explore the Congo in the 1870's.The piece measures 16" x 18" overall framed, with the actual image measuring 7" x 9 1/2". A rare image.
