A great early pioneer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by H. H. Clark, "Helena, Montana, April 2, 1882 to Milo H. Cooley, New Britain, Conn., in part: "…the winter has been mild and pleasant but March has been cold, rough and windy…we have rented our tavern for one year…at fifty dollars a month. We could have made more money to kept it ourselves but they are going to build the North Pacific Rail Road through here this yearend there will [be] a pretty rough class of customers top deal with and its not a good place for a family to live. We are fixing a house on the place to live in. It is a log building 18 x 20 that we used for a granary. [We] moved it about 20 rods from the hotel & on the garden close to the strawberry patch. Our school is just closed and we are living in the school house which is close by, will have our house ready to move into in about two weeks…we have 200 acres of land here and have a good deal of work to do fencing and fixing up the place. Times are lively Rail Road Building and emigrants coming in, and a good deal of building to be done all about…a grist mill will be built close to us…large speculations are going on in land about here. It is hard to tell what changes the Rail Road will make here…about our trip…after a continuous ride of 140 miles from Dillon by coach not one of the family knew we were here until next morning. The hired man slept in the Bar room. He helped unload the trunks without disturbing the family. Our trip was pleasant except the coach ride [which] was rough, but we will soon have Rail Road all the way and I intend to go again in a few years…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover and a, 3pp. 8vo., letter dated April 3, 1882 written by Clark wife's which basically repeats much of the same information as her husband's letter. Overall VG to near fine
