A great Dakota Territory pioneer's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by W. J. Boggs, on Windsor House, Huron, Dakota stationery, Huron, Dakota Territory, May 31, 1882 addressed to Milo H. Cooley who was a veteran of the Union army having served in the 27th Mass. Vols., in part: "I am still in the land of the Dakotas. We are having fine bright sunshine…crops are looking well. I have not heard from you…but my observations…as regard the prospect for work…is about as I wrote…there is more…here than building…I believe in a new country like this…you could do better in Ind. than in Huron and have all the advantages of good schools etc, lower taxes & many other advantages of an older established country over a new one, However if you were desirous of coming…to get some land. It would pay…to bring your family to Ind., get a place for them there then you could run up in the new country, west or north, take up a homestead under our soldier's papers…then take a preemptive and also true culture claim…in a shanty & 5 acres, Brooke would give you a patent by paying 1.25 per acre…you could spend the winter in Iowa…Homestead & work at your trade when in Dakota going to your claim once in a while & staying all night…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. VG.
