EWING, James (1736–1806) was a Pennsylvania soldier, statesman, and politician of the Colonial, Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary eras. He served in the Pennsylvania General Assembly and also as Vice-President of Pennsylvania, a position comparable to that of Lieutenant Governor. On the night of December 25-26, 1776, commanding five regiments, he was unable to cross the Delaware with Washington who later wrote, that “the Quantity of Ice was so great, that tho’ he did every thing in his power to effect it, he could not get over…” He served as Vice President of Pennsylvania from 1782-1784.Partly printed Document Signed “James Ewing / Vice President” of Pennsylvania, 1p, 15” x 11”. Philadelphia, May 1, 1783. Partially printed and completed in manuscript. On watermarked laid paper, silked, minor flaws. Embossed paper seal affixed with red wax at the upper left. In part “In the Name and by the Authority of the Freemen of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, The Supreme Executive Council of the said Commonwealth.” ... “George Bowman is appointed Captain of a Company of foot in the Second Battalion of Militia, in the County of Lancaster…”
