PICKERING, Thomas (1745-1829) Soldier and politician. Served as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army in 1780, and various cabinet posts in the Washington and Adams administrations including Postmaster General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State. Served in the Senate from 1803 to 1811 and in the House of Representatives form 1813-1817. A staunch Federalist, was a bitter enemy of Thomas Jefferson whom he described as “The Moonshine Philosopher of Monticello”. But he also opposed fellow Federalist, John Adams, whom he worked to undermine while serving in his administration. Third-person autograph document signed “Timothy Pickering QMG” in text, 1p., 8 x 5.25 in., West Point, March 5, 1783. A receipt for “...Thirty six dollars and seventy two nineteenths in full for forage rations due... Inbehalf [sic] of Capt. John Doughty fort major at West Point...” Signed by John Campbell, Assistant Quartermaster General. Pickering assumed the post of Quarter Master General in 1780 when Nathaniel Greene left to relieve Horatio Gates of his command southern army in the Carolinas.
