Newspaper Group of Six issues of the National Intelligencer, August 31, September 17, September 21, September 24, October 5, and November 23, 1831. Each issue is complete and authentic, 4pp., disbound, VG. From the August 31st issue, front page under “The Insurrection,” there is 1-1/4 column of various reports. “..The number of insurgents has been estimated at from 150 to 400 ... From twenty-five to thirty families are said to have fallen ... Many of the blacks are well mounted; their leader was shot ...” From an inside page, “List of White Persons ascertained to be killed.” Provides a listing of 59 people ..”Joseph Travers, wife and 3 children ... Thomas Barrow, who fought between 20 and 30 Negroes, till his wife escape .. Mrs, Walker and 8 childrend ...” From the issue of September 17th, interior page “The Insurrection in Southampton County” provides a listing of 20 slaves condemned to be hung. the listing shows the Slave’s name, Owner’s name, Time of Execution. Also provides a listing of the White victims. From the issue of September 21st, front page under “Virginia” we have several reports of the blacks being caught. “In Southampton, nine additional convictions of blacks tried on a charge of being concerned in the late atrocities ... in all 16 have been condemned. ... about forty blacks are confined in Nansemond jail ...” Also front page, full column “Commotion in North Carolina” deals with various possibel insurrections across the state. From the issue of September 24th, front page, “Governor Floyd of Virginia has issued a proclamation offering a reward of $500 for the apprehension of Nat Turner” continues with a physical description of Turner. From the issue of October 5th, front page “Reported Capture of Nat the Insurgent” (false report). Also front page, “ ..a negro girl of about 16 or 17 has been produced as a witness ... states that she has heard the subject of an insurrection ...” Her testimony resulted in 26 executions. From the November 23rd issue, front page, “We learn ... that the fanatical murderer, Nat Turner, was executed according to sentence, at Jerusalem on Friday ...” Turner was hanged, his body was flayed, beheaded and quartered. In the aftermath of the insurrection there were 45 slaves, including Turner, and 5 free blacks tried for insurrection and related crimes in Southampton. Of the 45 slaves tried, 15 were acquitted. Of the 30 convicted, 18 were hanged, while 12 received mercy and were sold out of state. Of the 5 free blacks tried for participation in the insurrection, one was hanged, while the others were acquitted.
