A complete and authentic issue of the Harper’s Weekly May 2, 1863, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the cover, three separate vignettes of slaves handling cotton, separated by a banner, “Cotton Pile Near the Worthington Plantation- Collecting Confiscated Cotton.” In the upper left, a guarded warehouse, upper right a wagon of cotton bales, and 1/2 the page is taken with “Rolling Cotton on Board the Tatum.” this shows four groups of three slaves rolling the bales onboard the ship. there is a related report. Then, from an interior page, a horizontal full page engraving “The President, General Hooker and Their Staffs at a Review in the Army Of The Potomac.” Hooker remained at the helm for only five months. Lincoln replaced Hooker with Meade just three days before Gettysburg.
