A complete and authentic issue of the Harper’s Weekly, January 30, 1864, 16pp, disbound, VG. From the interior, a full page illustration, “Emancipated Slaves, White and Colored - The Children are from the Schools established in New Orleans, by Order of Major-General Banks.” Each person is keyed. On a separate page is the report under the column headline “White And Colored Slaves.” In part, “The group of emancipated slaves ... were brought by Colonel Hanks and Mr. Phillip Beacon from New Orleans, where they were set free by General Butler....” A brief biography of each then follows. Of specific interest is “Wilson Chinn is about 60 years old ...sold to Volsey B. Marmillion ... (who) was accustomed to brand his negroes, and Wilson has on his forehead the letters ‘V.B.M.’ ...”
