2 5/8" x 4 1/4, excellent. Beautiful autograph of escaped slave, social reformer, and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (1818-1895). Signed and dated Washington, D.C. Jan. 7, 1876. At this time Douglass was speaking around the country on the rights of former slaves. In June he was the featured speaker at the Republican National Convention in Cincinnati where his eloquent address admonished the Republican Party for its emancipation of slaves, which provided freedom "by the letter of your law" without the ability to exercise that freedom physically or financially in society. Twenty-four African-American delegates attended the convention. This wonderful autographed card would make a nice presentation framed with an image of Douglass.
