Typed Letter Signed by John W.M. Appleton, 3pp. octavo, Salt Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, November 6, 1892, and reads in part: “...the Republicans are...having a desperate fight. This house is headquarters for our Monroe Republicans, adn they are keeping Everard busy with printing things which horesmen distribute. The dems are using whiskey, money, threats, etc. but we think we have them in our clutches...I send you a few of the circulars. The walls about the country villages are posted with pictures of a colored teacher whipping white children, and democratic statements, that we will establish mixed schools if we are successful. We made the first Constitution of the State, and forbade such action in it, but that makes no difference to a dem. when he starts to tell a story...” Very good condition....plus; Three pieces of anti-Grover Cleveland political imprints, pertaining to “Mixed Schools.” The printer of these writings was Everard Appleton (1872-1931), a poet & novelist of early American science fiction, who brother John (1832-1913) served as an officer in the 54th Massachusetts. A nice grouping of White Suprecmicst material.
