A complete and authentic issue of The Pioneer and Democrat, Saint Paul, February 21, 1862, 4pp., disbound, ragged at spine. From the interior, Frederick Douglass lately lectured in New York on the war. In closing he read an eloquent reply to the assertion that the negro was like the Indian, and would die out before the progress of civilization. In part, “The Indian wraps himself in gloom and proudly glories in isolation - he retreats before the onward march of civilization. ... he dies of a broken heart. Not so with the negro. ... Work him, whip him, sell him, torment him, and he still lives and clings to American civilization. ...”
