Autograph Letter Signed by Joel Shrewsbury (1776-1859) a salt manfucturerer in the Kanawha Valley, 1pp. quarto, July 24, 1849, with integral address to Samuel Hannah, of Charleston, Virginia, and reads in part: “...the cholera has got in my neighborhood and our gang quite sick with diarrehea, and have to have them closely guarded...I am told two of those Negroes Dam & John, was missing yesterday morning & their clothes gone. It is likely started Saturday night for Ohio state. Their Father, Israel Rice, is a free Negro & lives on David’s Creek & may conceal them yet. I think it more likely run away. It is likely those Negroes about Charleston may also run away before day of sale...and perhaps more of those up here as they have too many friends for Negroes to have. I again repeat they ought all to be scared. Saml. M. Shrewsbury was raised among them & I have tried to stimulate him to keep them straight, he says their mistress is sending for them occassionaly & he had no power to command the agt. he orders. He wrote to me yesterday that he had written to you that John & Saml. has run off, and sent it to you by a man who wished to pursue them...He also wrote he had advised you to put others, where there was danger, in jail...” Fine condition.
