Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of the New-York Observer, June 3, 1852, 8pp., disbound, near fine. From the front page, a brief yet important report “Fugitive Slaves in Canada.” In large part, Henry Bibb ... writes ... ‘I have opposed and shall continue to oppose lying and begging whether carried on by white or colored men and especially amongst the refugees in Canada ... I know that every man in Canada West who will work can make a good living, and it is disgaraceful to us as a people to continue sending agents over the country to beg for a living, when we are just as able to work for it as white men are.’” Henry Walton Bibb (1815–1854) was an American author and abolitionist who was born a slave. After escaping from slavery to Canada, he founded an abolitionist newspaper, The Voice of the Fugitive.
