A complete and authentic issue of the New York Tribune, July 25, 1853, 8pp., untrimmed, near fine. From an interior page is a printing of a letter under the headline, “CRUELTY TO SLAVES.” In part, “... since I witnessed there a sight which I can never forget. It was a slave that been a runaway from his master twelvemonths. After that time a white man is justified in shooting a slave, as he is considered an outlaw. This slave man was brought to the wharf, placed in a small boat, by two white men, early in the morning, with his head severed from his body, and remained there in an August sun until noon, before an inquest was held. ...” Also on an interior page is a fugitive slave report, “The Slave Case at Philadelphia.” This full column article reports on the court activity of one William Fisher, alleged fugitive from Maryland. In the report we find that both the claimed owner and the Marshall are arrested as the fugitve can not be found. The printed letter is signed “A Fugitive,” but is actually written by Harriet Ann Jacobs, the African-American female writer who escaped from slavery.
