A complete and authentic issue of the New York Weekly Tribune, April 24, 1858, 8pp., untrimmed, minor repaired split at the quarter fold. From an interior page running 1/2 column, “The California Slave Case’ reports on the Archy Lee Case. The report provides the background of slave Archy who was brought to California by his owner Charles Stovall. Lee sued for his freedom based on the fact that California was a free-state. The report reviews two decisions in which Archy was deemed a slave and the property of Stovall. “The case was heard by two Judges, who agreed on the principle of comity, and in the spirit of the Dred Scott case, travelers from the slave states have a right to pass through free states taking their slaves with them ...” But then, as Stoval attempts to take Archy by steamer, a twist “... a new writ issued by the County Judge of San Francisco .. a warrant against Stovall for kidnapping ...”
