A war-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Sherod Luther Leaphart, Co. A (Governor's Guards), 2nd South Carolina (2nd Palmetto) Vols., "At Home, Lexington Dist., S. C., May 8, 1862" to his sister, in small part: "…I reached Columbia about a week ago…Alice had grown so much I would not have known her…she was delighted to see me…I am now home on…business for my company…our regiment…re-organized some three…weeks ago-I was made Capt of our old company the Gov's. Guards…I don't feel satisfied to remain away from my company long…our regiment and brigade is now very near Richmond…there is so many folks from Charleston and other states flocking to our state for the summer and perhaps the war. Noah Huffman has a large family now boarding with him. Columbia is quite crowded with strangers…". VG
