A great war-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Sherod Luther Leaphart, Co. A (Governor's Guards), 2nd South Carolina (2nd Palmetto) Vols., "Camp of 2nd S. C. Regt. Aug. 24, 1862" to his sister, in small part: "…our regiment has been marching and moving so much here of late that I have scarcely had time to write…our division (which is Genl. McLaw's) is now encamped on mile on the Central Rail Road above Richmond…we were marched three different times down to Malvern Hill…to look after McClellan and his army…we found the last of his fond army had evacuated his late base…his troops have been sent to Genl. Pope…[Stonewall] Jackson is pursuing Pope and Pope [is] in full retreat…our division was the last to leave Richmond, the balance of our army are about us…or with Jackson…I had nineteen conscripts assigned to my company…two of them are from Richland Dist…they will make good soldiers…they will required a great deal of drilling as they are quite raw recruits…my lieutenants are rather wild-two of them are under arrest at this time for remaining in Richmond over night…about half the lieutenants in the regiment were arrested…for the same offense…our new Col. [future Brigadier General John D. Kennedy, WIA Gettysburg] is inclined to be strict yet I do not think too much so. I like him. Our brigade…is composed of the 2nd, 3rd, 7th & 8th S. C. R.'s and is commanded by Gen'l. Kershaw. The Division we [are] attached to is commanded by Genl. McLaws and is composed of Genl. Kershaw', Semmes, Barksdale, and Cobb's Brigades…". VG.
