A nice war-date Confederate officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Capt. Sherod Luther Leaphart, Co. A (Governor's Guards), 2nd South Carolina (2nd Palmetto) Vols., "Camp near Fredericksburg, Va., April 3, 1863" to his sister, in small part: "…our regiment is now…strong enough to make a big fight. I have the best drilled company in the regiment-it is frequently complimented by our col. [future Brigadier General John D. Kennedy, WIA Gettysburg] and others. the men of the regiment and brigade are in fine spirits…we now have minstrel show…in the brigade by the best musicians…they have logs for seats and enclosed by canvas of old tents…in one end they have a stage…it is not uncommon to have ladies from the neighborhood to attend…it us a rather course place for ladies to go; smoking pipes, and swearing around them while the show is going on is very common…a great many of the ladies of this state…have been exposed first to the Yankee camps and soldiers, and then to ours have become somewhat used to rough treatment and fare. During the battle of Fredericksburg…a great many of the best families at the town were camped in tents along side of our troops. This part of Va…is a very fine country. The land is rich…and [?] many of the prittiest houses and improved places that you will find anywhere in the country…where the armies have been -everything have been torn to pieces and ruined. The people at home…know nothing of this war yet. The Yankee army is just across the river…our Genls. expect active operations very soon. They have ordered us to send all baggage back which we cannot carry on our backs…weather the first move is to be made by the Yankees or ourselves time alone will tell…direct to Fredericksburg…". VG.
