A great war-date Confederate mother's home front letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Susan Leaphart, [Lexington District, S. C.], July 20, 63 concerning the sad news that her son was severely wounded and captured at Gettysburg, in part: "…after long days and nights of trouble I have at last heard from Sherod. He was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg on the 2nd of July. He was wounded in the arm and his arm had to be amputated above the elbow. Paul Shuler was also wounded at the same time in the leg. His leg was amputated just below the knee. They were still in Penn when we last heard from them. They were at a private [residence] doing well and [were] well cared for. Sammy says he would go after them but he cant get to them. Joe Huffman was slightly wounded but he had returned to camp. Tillman came out unhurt. Carrie it was a hard blow on me and your Pa. I am so troubled about him that I cant rest day nor night. Carrie cant you arrange your business to come and stay with me awhile. If Sherod lives to get home I know you would like to see each other and if he don't get home I would like to have you here awhile. You must not think about whether you and your children are fixed to come or not. Nobody looks at that these war times….Godfrey was home on furlough. He went back the day the fight commenced at Charleston…they are still on Sullivan's Island. He says he can see the Yankees working on Morris Island…we could hear the cannonading very distinctly…he has lost three men recently, Robert Coolger, Caleb Weed and Martin Geiger…Drury is in the army…".
