A great group of three war-date Confederate officer's letters, totaling three pages, written by Gettysburg casualty and amputee Capt. Sherod L. Leaphart, 2nd South Carolina (2nd Palmetto) Vols., Johnson Island, Ohio, to his mother, in part: "…[Johnstons Island, Oct. 18th 1863]…I am quite well and feeling very well in every respect. I am now so well fixed up that I will be comfortable-should I have to remain here all winter. Paul [Sgt. Paul H. Joyner, WIA Gettysburg] is also well…I have not heard a word-since a prisoner…the weather is quite pleasant here. Direct to Johnston's Island near Sandusky City Ohio-care of Col. Pierson…[Johnson Island, Dec. 4th 1863]…I received your letter dated Oct. 31st…I also received a letter from Saml. a few days previous to yours; being the only letters from home since I have been a prisoner.I was enabled, while in Fort McHenry, to hear from your [our] regiment and company, through the Baltimore papers. I saw…that they had one man killed. [Lt.] Paul [Shuler] and I are both well…Paul seems to enjoy himself as well here…as he usually did in camp…he sends his respects…direct to…Block 1 Room 6…[Johnsons Island Dec. 6th 1863]…it was a source of great joy to…hear from all of you after an absence of some four or five months…I am now in a comfortable room and very well supplied with clothes and blankets. I spend most of my time in reading; and at times I practice writing…I wrote to Godfrey a few days ago…the weather here so far has been pleasant…". Severely wounded in the right arm at Gettysburg, Leaphart lost that arm to amputation. As a consequence the first letter in this group was written for him by Lt. Paul H. B. Shuler, who lost a leg at Gettysburg, while the last two letters are by him as a south paw. Overall VG
