A nice war-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. Godfrey Leaphart, Co. C, 20th South Carolina Vols., "James Island, [S. C.], March 7, 1862" to his sister, in small part: "…our company has got through with the measles though we have a good deal of sickness in the company now…Martin Bouknight is dead, he is the only man that I have lost yet…we moved to james Island last tuesday…I would like our new camp ground if we had good water and if it was not for the wind…when the weather gets warm the water will be very bad…the sand and dust is flying all day. We are about four or five miles from Charleston. Our troops are making great preparations about the city for its defense. The people are nearly all moved off the island and they are moving their negroes off of this place. A great many of the people think that Charleston will be attacked soon. If there is any fighting to be done I want to be in it. Some of our regts was opposed to going to the island for fear that we would be surrounded and taken prisoners…I got a letter from Sherod…he says they have a hard time of it in Virginia. He seems to think that their army will be thrown back towards Richmond. They keep our Regt very busy drilling now…". VG
