A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Godfrey Leaphart, Co. C, 20th South Carolina Vols., "Dill's Bluff, [S. C.], April 14, 1862" to his sister, in small part: "…my company and the Regt has suffered a great deal from sickness . I have lost two men out of my company. The Regt has lost between forty and fifty. We are still on James Island about three miles from Fort Johnson…each company has to dig a well…the col. and his staff gets water out of my well. Our Regt…are only in for twelve months but I wish it was for the war…I would much rather have the position of a lieut,. than a capt…I have a good deal of labor to do, while the Lieuts. do but little…a gloom has been cast over the people about…the surrender of Fort Pulaski. We have conflicting news here from Corinth. I fear the results…three Regts were moved from Charleston to Corinth…it was thought…that our Regt would be sent off…the Regt were anxious to go. I want to be where ever the fighting is going on…I went to Fort Johnson…to go to the city and just before I got to the fort. There was four Yankee vessels run up towards the fort and commenced throwing shells in the direction of Fort Moultrie. I could see the flash of the guns on their boats and could see the shells explode. All the shells…fell short of the fort…one fell on Sullivan's Island and killed two men. They kept up the fire about an hour and then fell back. Our forts did not return the fire…". VG
