A good war-date Confederate officer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Capt. Godfrey Leaphart, Co. C, 20th South Carolina Vols., "Sullivan's Island, [S. C.], Nov. 6, 1862" to his sister, in small part: "…we are still here awaiting the approach of the enemy…our Regt has now been in service nearly twelve months…about two weeks ago there was a small fight near Pocotaligo. Our Regt was ordered up one night and ordered to cook three days rations…we got notice that the enemy has already been driven back…I knew a good many of the troops that were engaged…and some that were wounded…Alice [his niece] thinks it is time for us to do some fighting…she ask me…how many Yankees I had killed…I told her none, she said well I don't know what you have doing all this time…I got a letter from [my brother Lt.] Sherod [2nd South Carolina, WIA most likely Antietam]…he was still suffering…from his wound, his wound was a very severe one. Dr. Fair says if the ball would have struck him one fourth of an inch on the eyes it would have killed him on the field…[1st Lt.] Sidney Nunamaker [3rd South Carolina] has died from his wounds and Walter Counts [3rd South Carolina] also…John Shaler…think W. Counts died from neglect. The examination of the commissioned officers about Charleston is still going on. There has been three captains and about a dozen Lieuts. rejected in our Regt. Col. [Olin M.] Dantzler has a list of these but he will not make it known…he has made application and the Genl. [Beauregard] has granted them another examination. He told them…to prepare themselves for another examination…the board that was first examining has been relieved and a new board of officers appointed. Col. Dantzler is on the present board…he will manage to pass …all those of our Regt that have been rejected. He is giving them instructions now at night…". VG
