War-date Confederate officer's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Capt. Godfrey Leaphart, Co. C, 20th South Carolina Vols., "Lexington Dist. S. C., July 1, 1863" to his sister, in small part: "…you must all come and see the large cannon ball that I sent her. It is so heavy she can hardly roll it over…R. E. Coogler of my company died about ten days ago…I have one hundred and sixteen men now…I have transferred a few men to Capt. Keitt's Cavalry Company…Capt. Keitt has raised a cavalry company out of our Regt. We now have a squadron of cavalry attached to our Regt on Sullivans Island…the rest are on James Island. Maj. Genl. Lovell who was in command of New Orleans at the time of its fall, has been staying at the Congaree House for some time with his family. He has been assigned a command about Vicksburg…Samuel says…he could get an appointment on his staff…positions are powerfully sought after in the army and they are not easily obtained. I hope you will visit Charleston…and see the fortifications, batteries and forts…a great any ladies visit Charleston and the army around it…money is more plentiful than I ever knew it…". VG
