A great group of six (6) war-date Confederate home front letters written by the Leaphart family's matriarch and her varied grown children giving a plentiful amount of war news, reading, in small part: "…[daughter Mattie, Columbia, Apr. 7, 62]…we have glorious news…from Corinth. It was cheering to hear of such a victory for we have had nothing but reverses all this winter. The ladies here are doing all they can in aid of the gun-boat fund. [The ladies gunboat fund's proceeds were used to help supply the ironclad CSS Chicora.] They are going to have a fair this week the proceeds of which are to be used for that purpose…almost every one has given something in cash…[mother Susan Leaphart, Lexington, April 10, 63]…Sherod left for Va on the 25th of March. He reached Fredericksburg…and found his men all well and glad to se him…he left his trunk behind when he came home and it was broke open and every thing taken…I always thought it was hard to see you leave but nothing to what it was to see Sherod leave this last time…Arthur expects to leave for the army tomorrow. He is going to join Capt. Thomases company in Charleston…[daughter Mattie, Columbia, Aug. 22, 63]…we have not had a letter from Sherod in some time, he was well at last accounts. A letter has just come from Godfrey…he…sees hard times like all the soldiers…he could get some watermelons…but the people that sold them got to taking those that were too ripe and some that had been pulled too long and the Dr. of his regiment got Col. Keitt to stop them from buying any at all on the island…just at the time we are most crowded that is the time we're sure to have two or three sick servants…[mother Susan Leaphart, Lexington Dist., S. C., Dec. 23, 63]…your Aunt Nancy seems to be in great distress…the enemy is quite near where they live…she expects they will take there negroes and there place this winter…Carrie you don't know how troubled I feel about Sherod…we have sent him some Yankee money, but we have not received an answer to know if he got the money or not…your Uncle Jacob has not got Tillman's remains yet they have went twice after him. His funeral was preached the first Sunday in this morning. Meetze that got shot has died…". Overall VG.
