A Southern slave owner's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by J. M. Innis, South Santee, S. C., June 3, 1862, to his daughter, in part: "…I am at Ordinance Hall yet. The Yankees is on North Santee River stealing negroes [at] Mr. Lavern's place. I have been so busy since I was in town with Jack that I forgot to write anyone. I have lost over 80. Today I lost House [?]. I have them camped out in the woods up near the summer house. I am not able to plant over half my crops…yesterday Capt. De Hlits was caught by the Yankees. He & the crew escaped in the small boat to[?]. They took his schooner out to sea. He will be in Charleston as soon as he can go…I see the Yankey blockade everyday out at the Santee River…excuse this as I am…writing while the boy is getting the horse…".
